How to grow roots over rock?

I wouldn’t really bury the rock, if anything “wrap it” with suitable growing medium. You could even guide the roots where you want them. What I did personally was grow long and thin roots first, then drape them over the rock, cover them with soil piled against the rock, uncover piece by piece to let them harden off.

What is the best way to root a Ficus?

Take your cutting, and apply some rooting hormone to the end. Poke a small hole into the potting medium and push the cutting in until the lowest node sits on the surface. You may need to support the cutting with a small stake. Pat the soil down to secure the cutting in place.
